How to Spot A Leprechaun

This is a guidebook created for elementary school aged children to help them find Leprechauns. While everyone was getting into crystals over the pandemic, my fantasy-loving heart learned about Elementals or magical beings. Like paranormal activity, children are allegedly more sensitive to seeing Elementals, so I created a little guidebook to open their eyes to another realm.

Look & Feel

This book was aimed towards elementary school aged children so I wanted to have a hand done simple feeling to the illustrations that children can relate to and recreate. I kept the pages square to emulate a large storybook with additions of things like the folios and flourishes. I hoped to slow down the readers and make the experience interactive by playing with the type and allowing for a fun read that promotes using your finger to follow the lines. This way the type also becomes a visual element moving you along the book and feeling like magic on each page.

Color

I went with bold bright colors and funky illustrations to pull the readers in and transport them to the fairy realm. To keep the readers interested, I used different colors on each page so the book didn’t get too repetitive. The blue blobby elements act as the sky and backdrop to the book which creates a weightless floating feeling to allow the reader to get lost in this new world. The lime green and purple contrasting flowers that appear throughout the book also provide an alien-like element which feels like a flower we know, but is still based in another world with its vibrance.
